Three Steps to Prevent the Financial Pain of Payday Loans

The nation’s bad economy – with its high unemployment rate – is turning payday loans into a more important tool for a growing number of consumers. For many people, these small loans are a way to pay the bills until their regular paycheck arrives. Unfortunately, the world of payday loans is marked by excessive fees, exorbitant interest rates and horribly punitive late fees. There’s a reason why a growing number of state legislatures are crafting laws designed to reign in the fees and interest rates that payday lending firms charge their customers. But there is a way to use payday loans responsibly, a way to take on these short-term loans without spending an excessive amount in fees and penalties. You just have to follow three simple rules:
Emergency Use Only

Only use payday loans for real emergencies. If your phone bill is already late and your next paycheck doesn’t arrive for two weeks, a payday loan might be the right choice. If your car’s gas tank is on empty and you need to fill it to get to work each morning, a payday loan, again, might be the appropriate choice. But don’t turn to payday loans to fund a three-day trip to Las Vegas or that new outfit you’re dying to get your hands on. Taking out payday loans for non-essential items is the quickest way to suck the life out of your bank account.
Get It in Writing

One of the biggest dangers with payday loans is the fact that some lenders in this business charge such high interest rates and origination fees. That’s why it’s important for consumers to always ask up front what these fees are. And don’t be satisfied with simply asking: Get these fees in writing. If the payday lender with whom you are considering working won’t put this information on paper, walk away. There’s sure to be another payday lender who will. Remember, your goal is to avoid any nasty surprises. Getting the facts in writing is one way to do this.
Don’t Be Late

Finally, never,ever miss a deadline when it comes to paying back your payday loan. This is the surest way to go broke. Many payday lenders charge excessive penalties when customers are late on their payments. It’s a way for them to boost their profits. You, of course, don’t want to help these lenders do this, so never repay your payday loans late. Payday loans can be a useful tool if you’re facing a financial emergency. Just make sure to follow the three rules, and you’ll limit the financial beating they can cause.

I was part of one of the first generations of latch-key kids. As long as we didn't have a history of leaving our school bags on the stove or letting strangers into the house, we were pretty much allowed to stay home alone. Sell In May ...

One often heard saying regarding the financial markets is "Sell in May, and go away", which recommends that long trades (or buy and hold investments) are exited (or sold) in May of each year. The second half of the saying is sometimes "Stay away for September, but come back in November", which recommends that no further trades (or investments) are made until November. Whether the saying has any validity at all is very much up for discussion, but this year at least ... find out whether you should sell in May or not

Many readers have shared their experiences in dealing with the IRS in attempting to claim the adoption tax credit, which for 2010 was made a fully refundable credit. Taxpayers have experienced delays, multiple requests for supporting documents, and cross-communications. We've been mostly in the dark about what's going on behind the scenes, but new data sheds some light on what's going on.

TIGTA reveals $897 Million in Adoption Credits, Inefficiency

The IRS appears to be deluged. 72,656 tax returns claiming the adoption credit, worth a total of $897 million in tax credits. And over half of these returns are being reviewed by auditors in attempt to determine which tax returns are genuine and which are fraudulent. Providing extra resources to ensure the tax credits are issued properly is certainly necessary, but TIGTA also revealed that the IRS has no definite time frame for completing its audits.

IRS Webinar on Foreign Bank Account Reports

Last week I attended a special Web-based seminar held by the IRS about the Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR). The presentation covered essential information about the FBAR program and the IRS plans to make an archive of the presentation available, eventually. In the meantime, I have posted the PDF file that the IRS made available as a download for participants. There was also a question and answer session held at the end of the seminar, and I've summarized that information since it's not part of the PDF document.

Is the stock market becoming over-bought? The market's PE (using the S&P500 as a proxy for the market) is running in the low 20s. This is not high by recent standards, but is above the historical averages. Beware when jumping into a market that is flirting on the high side of PEs. The stock market may be preparing a strong retreat or, at the very least, more investors are losing confidence in the market and economy.

"Stock Market's Worst Day of the Year" - Yikes, What Do I Do

On June 1, 2011, the stock market suffered a big sell off. The Dow and the S&P500 bottomed out at lows not seen in a year. The Dow lost 2.2%, the S&P lost 2.3% and the Nasdaq dropped 2.3%. This was bad news by any measure. Yet, lost among the uproar, 127 stocks reported new highs on the same day. True, this is a very small number when you consider the thousands of stocks on the markets. What's the right move for most stock investors?
